The Class of 2007 Room 202 Mural
-
This year's work, inspiring the theme of the
new mural, is Tennessee Williams'
The Glass Menagerie.
Below you will find the mural in its various stages of production.
-
This year's mural refers to the strong symbolism
Williams employed in writing the play.
-
The unicorn is rare, fragile and unique, just
like Laura.
-
The fracturing of the unicorn in the mural, as in
the play, might symbolize Laura's fantasy world breaking apart. It is up to us,
the readers, to determine if this is a good or bad thing.
-
The brick wall in that break supports the fire
escape, the exit from both the apartment and the figurative fire of the
dysfunctional family.
-
The blue roses on the green grass refer to the
misunderstanding of Laura. Blue Roses might be wrong to some people but
they're right when regarding Laura.
-
The entire scene is seen through a glass pane,
transparent and distorting like the narrative voice of Tom. We see what he wants
us to see, based on his guilt-ridden memory.

The Class of 2006 Mural
Henry's Window
- Last year the junior class read excerpts from American
writer Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Three juniors painted a mural in
Mr. Janes' room. They titled it, Henry's Window, a compact and
brilliant reference to the point of view, struggle and metamorphosis of the
story's narrator.
- The literary artists spent many hours after school
outlining and painting the large mural. Some of them signed the mural with
their hand prints, visible on the left.
- I hoped you had the opportunity to stop by room 202 and see
the mural for yourself before this year's junior class began theirs. It will
remain archived here as will this year's and future murals.
