Rules and Criteria for Submissions
Genres - Formats - Submission Procedure - Guidelines - Frequency/Deadline

Genres

We accept the following genres of literature:

  • Oral Tradition

    • We would love to see stories and legends, traditionally passed down through storytelling, transferred to the written word. Published here, they will be archived for all to share!

  • Fiction

    • Put those writing elements to use! Short stories, novellas and novels are accepted.

  • Poetry

    • Unleash the poet within! Any meter or rhyme scheme works for us. Blank verse? No problem! SUBMIT!

    • We would like you to submit a few poems at a time, if possible.

  • Drama

    • Are you the next great American playwright? Let's see! We accept plays and skits.

  • Essay

    • Philosophize! Although we are mainly interested in dramatic essays, if it has artistic merit*, SUBMIT!

Formats

Sorry, but we do not accept printed or hand-written submissions*.

We will accept submissions in the following formats:

  • MS Word (.doc)

  • MS Works (.wks)

  • WordPad (.rtf)

  • Notepad (.txt)

  • WordPerfect (.wpf)

If you save your work in any other format, we cannot guarantee that we can access it. If you are unsure, COPY/PASTE your work into Notepad (text) or WordPad and submit.

Any formatting (font/color) will be removed when reformatted to this website.

Submission Procedure

You may Email your submissions to Jerry.Janes@k12.sd.us. You may also submit on diskette (IBM/PC compatible) or CD-ROM to Mr. Janes. If you wrote and saved it to your network directory at school, see Mr. Janes and he will retrieve it for you. Eventually you will be able to upload your submissions via this site as well as deposit directly to the network.

Guidelines

  • Length

    • We will accept submissions of any length, but for the sake of space we will break down longer work into segments*. For example, if you are contributing your Great American Novel, we look forward to reading it. However, we will publish it chapter by chapter.

  • Language/Subject Matter

    • All submissions must meet the AC school district expectations*. A rule of thumb to consider: If you cannot not use the language in the classroom, you cannot submit it to TALON

      • No profanity, at any level*

      • No questionable subjects*

    • The editors and staff of TALON reserve and exercise the right to edit all submissions for language, content and length*

  • Images/Graphics

    • Original artwork that complements your work is permissible

    • All images must be scanned. We do not scan.

    • Submitting artwork does not guarantee that it will be published

    • We do not accept or publish:

      • Photographs of any kind unless part of a class assignment

      • Again, if you did not create the artwork, we will not publish it

        • You may assign an verifiable* "artist" to do the artwork

      • Artwork may be edited for formatting purposes*

  • Credits

    • You must have your completed/signed Internet Publishing (IP) Permission form on file in order for your work to be considered. NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE

    • Unsigned work will not be considered

Frequency/Deadline

TALON will be published periodically during the school year.
