Accelerated Reader

New Accelerated Reader Format

  • Due to so many students rushing at the last moment or not following clear and simple directions, here is the new A/R format:
    • One eligible novel will be expected logged, read and tested every three (3) weeks
      • That's now only three books per quarter, no longer four
    • Your second quarter deadlines are already entered into your gradebook but are posted here as well:
      • First novel: 11/10
      • Second novel: 12/1
      • Third novel: 12/20
    • Only tests taken during that three-week period will be considered  for that period (you can't test in advance but you are free to log/read at-will)
      • You are welcome to log/read/test on more than one novel every three weeks but you need no longer inform me; in such cases I will automatically apply your highest test grade to that period's grade
    • No late credit will be given - If you miss a deadline, you have earned that zero
    • Grades will be updated at the end of the day on the deadline - no extra time will be allotted after school nor will the grades be posted earlier in the week as a heads-up (THIS is your heads-up)
    • A/R is still worth 10% of your quarter grade and entered into the nine-week assessment category - All other aspects (see your A/R page) apply
    • Finally, this has not changed but a reminder: If you choose to not test in my presence and/or get your log signed immediately (then - not the next hour, day, week, etc.) after taking a test you want to count, you will receive a zero

  • Search the Fiction section of our library.
  • Search for A/R books

    • Make sure your novel is at the correct level (9-10: MG, 11-12, UG) by checking it BEFORE YOU READ IT.
  • Click here to login to the A/R Testing Website

    • Remember, only logged tests taken in Mr. Janes' presence will be counted
  • The A/R Log is here.
    • You will be permitted to test on books you've already read (That circumvents the point of A/R).
      • Each book you read must FIRST be shown to Mr. Janes and logged on your A/R log AT THAT TIME.
      • Take the time necessary to do a good job reading it. Remember that A/R tests check your reading comprehension. If you blast through a book, do not expect a good score on the test.
      • When you're ready to test, do so first then retrieve your log from Mr. Janes and add the date tested and return to Mr. Janes for his signature.
    • The log must be completed AFTER any test you want considered and then immediately returned to Mr. Janes. In other words, if you bomb a test, don't note it on your log as you don't want it for a grade. Log and turn in only high scores.

You will be shown how and then expected to do the following:

  • When directed, go alone to the library to find a new A/R book to read.
    • If you start reading a book and find it is not suited for you, return it as soon as you're able and find another. Remember, one goal is to keep what you read HIGH INTEREST so it's actually fun!
  • Take A/R tests in Mr. Janes' room and in his presence. No tests taken elsewhere than in Mr. Janes’ presence will be considered.
  • You will be expected to test on one book every three weeks.
  • A/R is worth 10% of your quarter grade.
    • If I do not receive a log by the end of the quarter, you will receive a zero for that quarter.
    • Losing your A/R log is not an excuse. Take care of it and/or be sure to leave it with Mr. Janes after each book tested.
  • As you know, we are unable to have access to the proper diagnostic tests that show your true reading level. Please read and test only UG (grades 11-12) or MG (grades 9-10) level novels. Mr. Janes will not grant credit for level novels below your grade.
