Step-by-step Mini Workshops for Writers
WritingFix's Step-by-Step Mini Writers' Workshops are some of
the best writing exercises, presented in a step-by-step script format. You can
click the button in each when you're ready for the next instruction. Let the
interactive script take you from pre-write to a completed draft. The
instructions tell you to use paper and pen. Instead, improvise when necessary in
order to write the assignments in Word documents. Some assignments ask you to
share your work with a friend. Wait for your next workshop opportunity to do so,
if you choose that particular assignment as what you want to share.
Pick and complete three out of the
following nine assignments. Save each as individual Word documents in
your folder, naming them as titled. For example, if you choose A Day as Your
Shoes as one of your three, name that document: A Day as
Your Shoes.
-
A Day as Your Shoes
Most of us wear shoes most days, but have you ever thought
about what it would be like to be your shoes for a day? Your shoes would have
a whole different perspective on your day. As you write, really try to write
as if you were your shoes...make the words sound like your shoes.
-
Historical Point of View
Imagine you are any PLACE or any THING from history you have
learned about in history class. Imagine your place or thing has the ability to
tell others what is happening to you or what has happened to you. What
experiences can you write about? What would you say about them? To whom would
you speak?
-
Stream of Consciousness
Did you know there are probably mysterious topics hiding in
your head? Sometimes writing in a unique way can bring these topics to the
surface. Stream of consciousness writing is a method of getting to those
mysterious topics.
-
Here's your Timer - Sorry, you
won't be able to walk around for ten minutes. Do it internally!
-
Ouch, that hurt!
Have you ever been hurt and needed a Band-Aid or just a hug?
Did you fall off a horse or fence, or did you try to fly...only to find the
landing left you a little wounded? Let's see how well you remember your own
experience.
-
To Be Perfectly Honest...
Even though many of us don’t like to admit it, most people have
told a fib at some point in their lives. Think about a time you lied. You are
going to write a description about a time when you were less than truthful.
And always remember...honesty is the best policy!
-
Your Life's Soundtrack
Some believe all of the world should have a soundtrack--music
that plays behind us in everything we do. If music followed you around, what
kind of music would you like it to be. Thinking this way makes an interesting
writing exercise.
-
Rooms in my Heart...
Pretend that your heart has a blueprint, like a house. How many
rooms does your heart have? And who (or what) lives inside these rooms?
-
Building a Fable
Your mission is to write your very own fable. A fable is a
short tale with a moral, which often includes unusual or even supernatural
incidents. Many fables, such as those by Aesop, give human qualities to animal
characters. These beast fables are usually satiric, meaning that they are
meant to teach lessons or teach morals.
-
Favorite Song & Person
Do you have a favorite person--a friend or a family member? Do
you have a favorite song? Have you ever thought about putting your favorite
person and your favorite song together in a fictional scene? Doing this will
make an interesting piece of writing...if you use really interesting details
to show the WHERE and the WHO you are writing about.
