1. Read the literary text for your assigned selection.

2. Setting tells when and where a story occurs. Look at your selection and describe the setting and explain how it is used to develop suspense.

3. Characters are the participants in your story. List the characters in your story detailing physical appearance and other characteristics explaining why character is flat or round.

4. Plot is the sequence of events which consists of external and internal conflicts, a climax, and a resolution. Identify the conflicts, climax, and resolution in your selection.

5. The theme is the central message or moral that the author relates in the story. Poe has repeated themes in his works. What is the theme(s) in your selection and how does it relate to his life?

6. Are there any examples of flashback, foreshadowing, or irony in your selection?
