The Maya (presentation)
The Maya (Central
America)
For this project your
group is required to:
-
Create a presentation explaining or
illustrating
contributions of the ancient Mayan people and how these
contributions have been interwoven with contemporary society.
- We’ve discussed three
ancient Latin American peoples, the Maya, Inca and Aztecs. We viewed videos or movies about each.
We have books in the classroom courtesy of Mr. Janes on these topics. And we
know how to find information online and the library.
-
Presentation criteria:
-
Part I – The Introduction
Use the library, eText (see the
links on Spanish II page) and World Wide Web to research and then
discuss the distinction between the Mayans, Aztecs
and Incans.
-
Part II – Where they Lived
Based on the general
information you will find, discuss the geography of the Maya.
You will provide a map of where the Maya lived in
Central America (not Mexico).
-
Part III – Mayan Civilization/What it
meant to be Mayan
You will discover and discuss
all of the following uniquely Mayan aspects: mathematics, written
language, philosophy/religion, architecture, textiles and art. You will
show examples of each.
-
Part IV - Gone!
Answer these questions - Where did they go?
Why is it a mystery? Are there clues?
-
Part V - Mayan
Influence
Answer this question - How did the Maya
influence modern-day Guatemala and other parts of Central America?
-
The Presentation
-
You will organize this information into
a fifteen-minute presentation to be presented in class.
-
Your Powerpoint slide show will consist
of no less than twenty slides, two of which will be a cover
slide and a bibliography slide. You must have at
least one book in your bibliography and be prepared to cite where you
used that source in the post-presentation discussion.
-
Using images you find as well as
snippets of text you find in your research as content for the Powerpoint
slide show. I encourage you to use web links, animation and custom
timing selections available with the program. However, you will not be
graded on your Powerpoint skills. You will be graded on the evidence you
provide of your knowledge and understanding of the topic.
-
Remember, YOU are the presentation, NOT
Powerpoint – You will not be just reading off the screen.
-
You will
be prepared to answer any questions from the
audience, based on the presentation criteria.
Save the presentation to the “Las Personas
Famosas” folder (under shared-students-MrJanes) so Mr. Janes may retrieve it for
grading purposes. Name it “The Maya” to identify it as you’ll be adding
more during the semester.
Presentation: Friday, April 7
