Transcendentalist Society Project

After reading selections from Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman, and discussing the ideas and concepts prevalent in these pieces of literature, here is an assignment so that you can more deeply understand the concepts and apply them to your own ideas of how you think a society "should" be.

You are to select one partner for this project. You have one week (start to finish) to complete this project, so make sure that you select a partner on whom you can depend. You and your partner are going to create your own Transcendentalist Society. Remember that your society must adhere to the ideas common to this mode of thinking... specifically, the ideas of relying on one's self for true happiness, the emphasis on nature, the importance of minimal government intervention, and the belief that humans are innately good.

You and your partner will create a PowerPoint presentation that includes and completes all of the following tasks:

Slide 1: Select then publish a name for your society. You may create a name with some meaning (from something you already know) or come up with an acronym.
Slide 2: Write a pledge illustrating the values and allegiances of your society.
Slide 3: Design and create a flag using colors and symbols to illustrate the values of your society. Explain why you chose those colors and/or symbols. Draw (yes, you may re-task an existing flag but you must change it) the flag using any one of the following and then import to your presentation: MS Paint, Gimp or these Web 2.0 apps:

Slide 4: Develop a monetary system for your society, giving samples of the currency and explaining in detail how the system works.
Slide 5: Explain the kinds of work or careers in which your society would encourage its citizens to engage.
Slide 6: Describe the type of environment where your society would be. For example, would it be a rural society, an urban society, an island? A combination?
Slide 7: Describe at least three (3) behaviors your society would deem as inappropriate/criminal. Then explain how your society would deal with those citizens who break your laws or norms.
Slide 8: Create some type of propaganda that would encourage others to become a part of your society. "Sell" your society to a prospective citizen. Do more than just summarize slides 1-7 - show a fresh approach or insight you haven't yet shared.

You and your partner will present your society to the rest of the class. You will explain (not merely read) all of the above aspects to the rest of the class. You will close your presentation with a Q/A session - be prepared to answer any question (think ahead - what might be asked?). You will be graded on your presentation, general effort, creativity and adherence to Transcendentalist ideas.
