The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet

To Aid Understanding

Before Reading

Preview the Selection

Read the information on pages 298 and 299. Then, preview the cast of characters. Note that the play is divided into five acts and multiple scenes. Then, turn to page 408 and review the information about plot and resolution, focusing on the plot pyramid and the parts of the plot. As you read, should be recording summaries of each scene in your notebooks.

During Reading

COMPLETE Your Homework

COMPLETELY respond to all questions and define Vocabulary. Being adequately prepared for a random Reading Check will greatly increase your understanding of the play.

Also, remember the rule: Read it Thrice.

If you read anything once, to get through it, then a second time to focus on the details and finally a third time to review and catch anything you might have missed, you will meet expectations. If you choose not to apply this simple strategy, you might not meet expectations.

Record Your Summaries

1.Drama is written to be performed. Although you cannot put on a performance of the play in the classroom, you can read it in character. As a class, we will assign characters and read our parts aloud. Someone should also take the part of reading stage directions. When you are not reading, follow along in the text. At the end of each scene, you should stop reading and write a summary of the events in the scene. Record important information about the setting and the characters. Be sure to label your summaries by act and scene.

Fix-Up Idea: Use Guided Reading Questions

If you have difficulty applying the reading strategy, use the Guided Reading Questions to focus on the play’s important events and characters. Before reading a scene, preview its Guided Reading Questions. Then, as the play is being read aloud, jot down your answers to the questions. Use these answers to help you focus your summaries.

After Reading

Complete a Plot Diagram

When you finish summarizing the acts and scenes, you should review the information about the parts of plot on page 408. Identify the parts of the plot. Use your summaries to help you remember events and when they occurred in the play.
