Q: Why should he be important to me, a Nebraska high school Creative Writing student?

A: 1) He is the Poet Laureate of Nebraska in Perpetuity.
    2) His poems had Western themes, very popular in this area: Native Americans, explorers, trappers
    and pioneers.
    3) Neihardt On Creative Writing

A Selection of Poems of John G. Neihardt - We will workshop each:

Your Task:

Write three poems, each under thirty (30) lines, for the contest and save them to your Creative Writing folder as neihardt1, neihardt2 and neihardt3. Utilize any one (or combination) of the following Western themes:

  • Western Heroes
  • Western Culture
  • Native Americans
  • Explorers
  • Trappers
  • Pioneers
  • Western landscapes (one of his favorites, as we've read)
  • The Natural Environment
