Please note: Completely original work is expected; plagiarism will be easily detected resulting in a zero for the assignment and referral to the administration per district policy. All work will be scrutinized using online tools that detect plagiarism. There is never an excuse. You will learn how to correctly cite sources and be expected to do so. Any work not cited will be considered plagiarized; as a result you will receive zero points on the final draft, resulting in an "F" for the Paper. This is your warning. Classroom PoliciesClassroom respect and appropriate behavior is expected: · Rule #1: Mr. Janes has only one, simple rule regarding behavior: Don’t waste his time and he won’t waste yours. o If you aren’t positive as to what might be wasteful, review your student handbook. · Rule #2: Always remember: o Education is not something done to you, rather, it's done for you. o The word "can't" translates as, "I Clearly Am Not Trying." Computer Lab/Laptop/Classroom Computer Rules: · Regarding food and drink, review your student handbook. · Your workstation is your responsibility and you must clean up after yourself. If you leave your workstation unlike you found it, you will be held responsible. · Print only with permission. · Zero-tolerance policy regarding unauthorized surfing. Stay and work only on-task. Infractions result in time after school, partial loss of credit, full loss of credit and ultimately suspension from the network. Network Expectations: We save some of our work to our classroom folders on the network. Beyond making sure you always back up your work, you will be responsible for knowledge of file management such as: · Computer/network/Internet ethics · Correct location/folder · Destination and retrieval of files If you cannot access the network or Internet for any reason, you are still responsible for that work. If this is the case, you will be held responsible to find a solution, not Mr. Janes. Again, BACK UP YOUR WORK. Use the online storage solutions Mr. Janes will share with you. If you back up, broken thumb-drives, lost CD-ROMs and emails that mysteriously never reach their target are not an issue. To repeat: You will be accountable for the choices you make. See your handbook to review Internet and computer rules. If you break a rule, you will be caught and lose your Internet/computer privileges per district policy. Some work is done and handed in online and via the network. If you lose your privileges, it will be your responsibility to find a way to accomplish and submit your work. Again, you are responsible for your work being handed in, even if you lose your privileges. Mr. Janes will not have his time wasted (see rule #1) creating alternate assignments because of your decision. Listening and Working Skills: · When doing group work, you may confer with your classmates. · When doing individual work, you need to work as an individual, by definition. Do not ask others for the answers. Do the individual work assigned alone as it was assigned for the purpose of mastery. Ask only Mr. Janes if you have a question regarding the assignment. Language: The language you use will be appropriate to the task, most often formal (ask Mr. Janes when in doubt). · In the interest of mastery of the communication skills you'll need in the workplace or college, you will always be graded for spelling, punctuation and grammar. · Proofread everything you do. A suggestion: consult a dictionary and/or a peer, teacher or parent. o BEWARE OF SPELL CHECK as it can suggest the wrong word or misunderstand your context. Late Work Policy: An emergency on your part does not become one for Mr. Janes. · All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on their due date. If you’re doing the work while the rest of the class is otherwise engaged, you’re not paying attention and this establishes a pattern to avoid. o District late work policies are in effect in case of an excused absence. o If you are absent for any reason, consult Mr. Janes’ website or contact him to see what you missed. § Mr. Janes is not responsible for getting your make-up work to you. · If you don’t have an assignment when due, it is automatically ½ credit. o You have until the end of school that day to hand in the late work. Mr. Janes will stay late if need be. o After that, it is a zero in the grade book. Extra Credit: In the workplace and college, there is no extra credit. To best prepare you for that real world outside this classroom, none will be offered for any class. There will be ample time given to complete all assignments in class. Manage your time and this will not be an issue for you. Again, no extra credit will be offered, so please do not ask - instead, prioritize the abundant time you now have. Plagiarism: · Plagiarism is copying the the whole or part of another's work and presenting it as your own. o This applies to all forms of writing and media such as photographs, clip art, audio, video, etc. o The rule of thumb is if anything needs sources, you must correctly cite that source when: 1) quoting, 2) paraphrasing, and 3) summarizing. § The easiest way to remember this, regarding any writing, is if you're sharing anything not commonly already known, you are likely using someone else's research/work. · Mr. Janes will explain this in detail at the beginning of the year. · If you plagiarize, you will be caught and will receive a zero for that assignment, at the very least. Detention* Mr. Janes resolves minor tardies, behavior issues and other Student Handbook concerns. If you choose to break a rule, you will be informed of when you will serve your detention with Mr. Janes, most likely that same day. Per the administration, students can serve 4:15-4:30 every day and still catch the bus, so there is no excuse. If you miss a detention, you will be expected to serve twice the initial time. If you fail to do that, it will automatically become a referral to the school principal. *Detention time does not count as Tutoring time and vice versa., meaning if you are required to serve a detention with Mr. Janes the same day you are to attend Tutoring, your detention will be rescheduled as academics trumps anything else in Mr. Janes’ classroom.
