Read/Think/Reflect

Please name your essay Word documents as follows and upload to Moodle by the deadline:

  • rtr1
  • rtr2
  • rtr3 (if need be)
  • (Et cetera...)

We've spent three quarters meeting the expectations to read, think and reflect. This is what will be expected of you in college or the workplace so now is the time to be challenged to do this independently.

  1. Select a novel from the Book List
    • Borrow it from our library. If not available, you can always borrow it from another library, see if it's in your English 12 Literature textbook or read/download the eText (check Project Gutenburg first) version.
    • Make sure this is a novel you want to read because each novel has a deadline
      • Two (2) equally spanned across fourth quarter (appx. every three weeks)
    • Verify that it has an associated A/R test
    • Log the novel with Mr. Janes
      • Students will not be allowed to read the same novel
      • Once a novel from the list has been read, it will not be allowed again
    • Dedicate the time in and out of class (estimated one hour per night for homework, minimum) and effort (think, take notes as you read) necessary to read and research the novel and what others think, if necessary
  2. Take the A/R test for that novel
    • As always, take tests only in Mr. Janes' presence
    • You are not permitted to use the novel or anything else (Internet, notes, phone-a-friend, etc.) as a  resource
    • That test grade will count - Like always you are welcome to test on another meeting the aforementioned criteria, but again, there will be concrete deadlines for which no extensions will be given
  3. Write a five-paragraph essay on the novel
  4. Repeat
    1. Need extra credit? Read/Think/Reflect on a third (or more) novel from the list - Your lowest scores will be replaced or it (and others) can be averaged in to your overall score - your choice. But if you choose to do so, a full assignment is expected - read, test, essay.

Deadlines for A/R Tests and Essays:

  • 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 26
  • 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 17

Grading Structure

  • A/R tests = Test/Projects Category (40%)
  • Essays = Homework/Quiz Category (40%)
  • Reminder: Your American Legion Auxiliary Essay is worth 20% and that deadline remains May 3

This should be relatively easy for you, assuming you meet these clearly defined, fair expectations now and have done so all year. But this is in no way a blow-off. More importantly, the latent objective of this assignment is to challenge you to discipline yourself both in time management and dedication so you are better prepared for your future, no matter the direction you choose to go.

It's been my pleasure to teach you the past two years and I wish you all the very best. Good luck out there, soon-to-be graduates.
