The Basics - Your position statement assignment

  • Homework: Brainstorm three controversial, but school-appropriate, issues.
    • Write each as a Position Statement (I believe...).
    • For each issue, find and cite three reliable resources.
      • Websites: Copy/paste in URL.
      • Printed materials: Title, author, page (and keep to hand in to judge prior to debate).

  • As a class, we will critique each issue with the following criteria:
    • Can it be debated logically, using ONLY facts?
    • Is the issue about evenly divided among the class?

  • Your side's assignment: Support your position.
The affirmative side will support the status quo while the negative will try to refute it.
    • Create a list of points to support your assertion.
    • Each point must have a citation.
    • This list is to be handed in to the judge the day before debate.
      • Any emotional points or opinions will be struck from your list.
      • Any points without support will also be banned.

  • Your side will have ample time to confer before the debate.
